You could knock me over with a feather, right now. Am I dreaming, or is my father's horrid wife being arrested for kicking me, and getting carted off to the dungeons to do time for her crime? Do they actually have dungeons at the palace? I thought they were supposed to be underground, but in New Orleans, we're actually already below sea level, so we can't even have basements, much less cavernous underground dungeons. Where on earth will they put her? Undeniably curious, I lean closer to Elliot.

"How can you have dungeons in New Orleans?"

"Hmm? Oh," he chuckles, "they're actually on the first floor, which we use as a basement, or dungeon, level, depending on which part of the castle it's beneath."

"I never knew that!" I exclaim, floored. "So, if it's beneath the kitchen?"

"Then it's the cellar and wine cellar— oh, and the laundry room. Mustn't forget about that. Beneath the throne room, it's the garage, and beneath the ballroom, it's the dungeon."

"Because the ballroom is so massive?"

"Exactly," he winks at me. "I love how smart you are. Looks and brains! The whole package. I like it."

I duck my head as my face heats up. Ever since my mother passed, no one has really seen the good in me. My father has been too distracted with work and his new wife to pay any attention to me. She certainly wasn't going to pay attention, unless it was to cause me pain. Yet here Elliot is, complimenting everything about me. That can really turn a fella's head— especially when the one handing out the compliments is tall, dark, and gorgeous like Elliot. He's just my type. Apparently, I'm his, too. Can this day get any better?

Before you ask, the answer is yes. Yes, it can.

As soon as we step outside, my stepmother gets louder. "Bart! Bart! Do be a dear and tell them they can't arrest me. They're going to take me to the castle and throw me in the dungeon! You can't let them do it!"

"Well, of course, I can. You always did have designs on the castle," he shrugs. "It looks like your dreams are coming true."

"They are not! This is not what I wanted. You better help me, or—"

"Or what? Or you'll divorce me?" He laughs in her face. "You're too late, because I'm calling my lawyer, first thing in the morning, and I'm divorcing you before you can divorce me."

"Baaarrttt! You can't!" Her voice fades to a muted shriek as she's stuffed into the backseat of one of the castle patrol cars that followed us here and they shut the door.

The king cocks an eyebrow, "Do I want to know what happened in there?"

"She became abusive to Kash when I wouldn't hand over his laptop," Elliot sums it up succinctly.

Dad stands straighter and scowls toward the car, "Wait. She abused my boy?"

"Eww, assaulting royalty. Yep, can't do that," the king pats my father's shoulder. "I hope you weren't too attached to her. That's a royal felony. Carries an automatic sentence of at least ten years— longer if visible damage was sustained.
